We are Black Mamas Matter (BMM)
Whether it be due to systemic injustices that plague the healthcare system, a lack of physical access or because of poor health literacy that causes challenges in navigating the healthcare system, black women are systemically and statistically disparaged. We want to lead the change.

Research Questions |
For centuries there have been many accounts of African American women being discriminated against or dismissed by their healthcare providers. This can be seen through many statistics, such as the maternal mortality rate for black women being 3-4x higher than that of white women (Howell 2018). Many scholars have claimed that physicians are the cause of this issue, but there are far more factors that contribute to this problem. Firstly, medical schools that produce these physicians are barely being researched and held accountable for the physicians they place into the medical world. On the other end of the spectrum, black women in marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by inaccessibility to proper maternal health care before, during, and after pregnancy.
Team InformationWe are a University of Maryland, College Park class of 2025 Gemstone Honors Program research team focusing on ways we can use modern technologies and advancements to create a more accessible and inclusive maternal healthcare system for Black mothers.
