Why this project?
Our Three Main Goals:
SurveysThe best information comes from the source. We will survey both medical professionals and Black mothers in our target community to receive firsthand information.
ResearchWe will do background research into the different causes and effects of Black maternal health disparities on both Black mothers and their healthcare providers
Discussion with CommunitiesWe will work directly with our target community, not above or without. Though we are researchers, the best way to gather information is from those directly impacted.
Potential Communities of Impact
The Healthcare SystemOne aspect of this project will investigate how medical schools impact the rate at which physicians marginalize their African American women patients. This part of the project would consist of researching the impact of the inclusion of history of medicine courses in medical school's curriculum and the extent to which they affect physicians’ bias towards their African American women patients.
Black MothersThe other aspect of this project would investigate the impacts of inaccessibility of maternal health outcomes in African American patients. From this information, we will attempt to use modern technologies, such as cell phone applications and other technological resources, to improve access to maternal health care by increasing health literacy and simplifying the process in which mothers seek information, making it much easier to navigate the ever growing, complex healthcare system.
Our goal is to make notable change in Black maternal healthcare in our local community. |
